The traffic congestion at the new roundabout turned signal-controlled junction at Wai Yip Street and Hoi Yuen Road during peak hours has eased, according to Kwun Tong district councilor Wilson Or Chong-shing. However, there is a possibility of it returning during the new school year.
Or stated that the congestion on the first working day at the new intersection was due to the reduction of lanes from three to two in some areas, as well as the closure of part of the traffic lanes near the Kwun Tong Ferry Pier.
After communication with the Transport Department, the lanes were reopened and traffic flow improved, but Or is concerned the jams might recur as school starts in a few days.
Regarding the duration of the green light, Or said the traffic signals have seen noticeable improvement this morning after relevant departments had made adjustments.
The Transport Department has stated that they have adjusted the appropriate green light duration based on the latest traffic conditions in order to alleviate the traffic situation.
Or added that he would contact engineering representatives from government departments to conduct an on-site inspection to ensure a smoother transition when the new school term starts.
He noted that the old roundabout had become saturated over the years as the district had developed from an industrial area to a commercial zone, leading to frequent accidents.
Regarding the first day of school next week, the Civil Engineering and Development Department's engineering team has been working with the Transport Department and the police, arranging inspections at various intersections on the day and will help divert traffic when necessary.
