The comments came as the government announced that over 80 mega events will be held in the first half of the year, covering culture and art, sports, finance, and trade exhibitions.
Timothy Chui Ting-pong, executive director of the Hong Kong Tourism Association, told a radio program this morning that there is fierce global competition in post-pandemic tourism, and there is no exception for Hong Kong.
He said reshaping the vibrant and dynamic image of the city would contribute to the development of the tourism industry, while all sorts of travelers - including long-haul, short-haul, and transit passengers - can boost the local GDP.
However, Chui noted that most travelers now place more emphasis on food, shopping, and entertainment experiences.
He added that to sustain and increase visitor numbers, Hong Kong needs to offer new activities while incorporating traditional elements.
Meanwhile, Simon Lee Siu-po, honorary fellow at the Asia-Pacific Institute of Business at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said authorities should set up key performance indicators to measure how many overseas tourists each mega event can attract.
“Certain events, such as international fashion exhibitions, hold global significance, while local traditional activities like the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance also draw foreign visitors,” said Lee.
He said by using data-driven insights, the government can make informed decisions on whether to hold certain events regularly or on a larger scale rather than solely focusing on the number of events.
