A fatal car accident in Wan Chai has seen two taxi passengers dead after their taxi collided with a Citybus at the junction of Fleming Road and Harbour Road on Sunday evening.
The accident happened at around 9.30 pm yesterday when the taxi was traveling along the Fleming Road flyover and was hit by a Citybus double-decker when it reached the junction at Harbour Road.
A 47-year-old female passenger and a 59-year-old male passenger were trapped in the taxi after the collision, with both of them unconscious. They suffered head injuries and were sent to Ruttonjee Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital, respectively, where they were declared dead after failed resuscitation attempts.
It is understood that the male passenger was a famous plastic surgeon, Wilson Ho Wai-sun, and the female passenger was a tourist from the mainland.
The 33-year-old female taxi driver suffered minor injuries and was sent to Ruttonjee Hospital for treatment, and was then transferred to Eastern District Hospital.
After a police investigation, the taxi driver was arrested on suspicion of "dangerous driving causing death."
The 30-year-old male Citybus driver was not injured and assisted the police in the investigation. The bus was not carrying passengers when the accident occurred.
Citybus said in a statement that the non-operating bus involved in the accident had followed traffic signals when the collision occurred.
“Citybus is deeply saddened by the incident and extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We will fully cooperate with police investigation.” The statement read.
