Hong Kong a conduit for mainland, French firms

Wong Yuk-shan, former president of the Hong Kong Metropolitan University, will fill the shoes of Maria Tam Wai-chu and become the deputy director of the Hong Kong Basic Law Committee.
The appointment of 73-year-old Wong, a former Hong Kong deputy to the National People’s Congress, was announced through the official website of the standing committee and he is now in Beijing meeting with the country’s top legislature.
The committee has 12 members, including six from Hong Kong and six from the mainland. The Hong Kong members include Wong, William Wong Ming-fung, Johnny Mok Shiu-luen, Arthur Li Kwok-cheung and Priscilla Leung Mei-fun.
Shen Chunyao has been serving as the director of the Basic Law Committee since March 2018.
Wong was appointed as vice-president of the City University of Hong Kong in 1998 and of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2006.
He served as the chairman of the Consumer Council between 2013 and 2019, and is now the chairman of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong.
