Kenneth Lau Ip-keung has been reelected as the chairman of Heung Yee Kuk without any competition as he saw his term extended for another four years on Thursday.
Lau, from the Yuen Long district of Heung Yee Kuk, first succeeded his father, Lau Wong-fat – also an influential rural leader – as the Kuk’s chief in 2015.
The remaining two vice-chair positions were also reelected by Daniel Lam Wai-keung of the Southern district and Mok Kam-kwai of the Tai Po district.
Lam was unchallenged during the election, while Mok, the chairman of the Shatin Rural Committee, defeated Peter Lam Yick-kuen, chairman of the Tai Po Rural Committee, by a 71-55 vote.
The election started at 2.30 pm today and ended about an hour later. It was monitored by Eureka Cheung Yi, the Deputy Director of Home Affairs and also a returning officer.
Lau said he was happy to be reelected as the chairman and hoped he could lead Heung Yee Kuk and residents in the New Territories to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Kuk coming in three years.
He noted Heung Yee Kuk would definitely support the government on development projects and hoped residents could also contribute to the planning of the Northern Metropolis.
Lau added he already felt pressure over government-sponsored projects like the Northern Metropolis, the Kau Yi Chau artificial islands, and the “three railways and three roads” initiative.
He also appealed to the public to look at the “bigger picture” and called on the government to coordinate with Heung Yee Kuk.
When asked about seven villages not being included in the planning of the San Tin Technopole, Lau said he has met with the villagers and leaders there and will reflect their opinions to the government.
