In the early hours of Friday, the student union council held a press conference, saying that it will retract the motion in expressing deep sadness to Leung Kin-fai, who stabbed a police officer and killed himself on July 1.
The council yesterday passed a motion to express deep sadness toward the death of Leung, and appreciate his sacrifice to Hong Kong.
Apart from retracting the motion, members of the executive committee of the student union also bowed and apologized to students and all citizens troubled by the incident. They all resigned with immediate effect.
The council issued a letter of apology as well, in which it admitted the content of the motion was inappropriate, and the student union didn't intend to incite unlawful crimes. It added that the council realized the seriousness of the incident and extended its deepest apologies.
Yesterday, the university and Security Bureau condemned their act as the motion was passed.
HKU condemned the act of students for using the name of the council to play down violent attacks, while the bureau slammed the act of the council as no different from supporting and encouraging terrorism.
