The arch bridge for the Cross Bay Link, Tseung Kwan O has been delivered from the mainland to Hong Kong today.
The arch bridge, 200 meters long and about 10,000 tones heavy, was designed and built in Shanghai by Nantong Zhenhua Heavy-Duty Equipment Manufacture, and then will be erected by floated-in method on the bridge pier.
The dual-lane highway spanning Junk Bay will connect Lohas Park and the industrial district at the southeastern part of Tseung Kwan O to Tiu Keng Leng via the Lam Tin Tunnel, offering Tseung Kwan O residents and workers an alternative route from Wan Po Road - now the only passage linking the remote district to the rest of Hong Kong.
The roughly 1.8-kilometer-long bridge, which features a cycling track and footpath, along with trees and other green features, was expected to be open in 2022.
The government had previously announced a two-year delay for the infrastructure project from 2020 to 2022, with its cost risen to HK$5.62 billion - an increase of around 80 percent over original estimations.
The Cross Bay Link will also not be ready in time to link with the Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel, which is expected to be completed late this year.
