According to the police, the two claimants are a married couple, both aged 37, who claimed to be a taxi driver and a nurse respectively. Police seized a large amount of valuables from their residence and towed away a taxi registered under the wife's name.
The married couple was involved in 22 claims, sometimes claiming to be a driver, and sometimes claiming to be a pedestrian, all of whom claimed injuries in the 22 minor traffic accidents, said superintendent Charles Fung Pui-kei, at the commercial crime bureau's fraud division.
Subsequently, the driver filed civil claims with the insurance company, with the largest claim exceeding HK$300,000.
The two accomplices, aged 56 and 69, are both doctors.
It was discovered that the couple had used forged documents, including fictitious receipts and income statements, and had used multiple doctor's certificates to obtain extended sick leave.
Suspected cases of traffic-related scam have now increased to over 100, including cases referred by the insurance industry and reports from the public.
