The gathering brought together generational overseas friends who have collaborated closely with the HKBA for decades. The relaxed evening allowed candid discussions on shared legal issues and served as a reunion, reaffirming Hong Kong’s active role in the global rule of law network.
Chairman of the HKBA, Jose Maurellet SC, emphasized that as a leading common law jurisdiction, Hong Kong has both the responsibility and privilege to maintain strong connections with the worldwide legal profession. He noted that such visits give overseas guests the opportunity to witness the operation of the rule of law in Hong Kong firsthand and to exchange frank views on matters of common professional interest.
Among the distinguished attendees were the President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, the President of LAWASIA, the President of The Law Society of Singapore, the Secretary General of the Fédération des Barreaux d’Europe, the Clerk of the Faculty of Advocates, and the Immediate Past President of the Law Society of Ireland.
The dinner marked the start of a two-day program for more than 100 overseas guests from over 20 jurisdictions.
Tomorrow’s events begin with a classic Hong Kong tram sightseeing tour in the morning and conclude with a welcome cocktail reception in the evening at the historic Former French Mission Building, the former home of the Court of Final Appeal.
These activities highlight the HKBA’s ongoing commitment to fostering robust international engagement and showcasing Hong Kong’s enduring status in the global legal arena. (298 words)
