CUHK’s Lo Kwee Seong Pavilion wins top HKIA architecture award

The Lo Kwee Seong Pavilion at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Art Museum was awarded the “Medal of the Year” at the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Awards 2025 (HKIA Awards). The awards recognize excellence in architectural design and promote public appreciation of local landmarks.

Designed by Dr. Rocco Yim, principal of Rocco Design Architects Associates Ltd and an honorary professor of the CUHK School of Architecture, the cantilevered building sits on a slope within CUHK’s mountainous terrain and features a V-shaped column symbolizing heritage and support.

The pavilion, which opened in March 2025, spans 1,770 square meters and houses the Harold and Christina Lee Gallery for special exhibitions, the Lee Hysan Atrium with a café and bookshop, an artist studio, and workshops. Its design reflects the peaks of the Lingnan mountains and blends with the campus topography, creating a new cultural and architectural landmark.

Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, CUHK’s vice-chancellor and president, said the project was made possible by the Lo Kwee Seong Foundation and the family of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Lee.

“The gifts have enabled Dr. Rocco Yim to design a state-of-the-art facility that integrates art-making, curating, and teaching,” he said. He added that the pavilion would enhance interdisciplinary research, foster collaborations, and provide students with hands-on training, helping to strengthen Hong Kong’s role as a hub for education and the arts.

The HKIA jury praised the pavilion for its “dramatic, well-crafted spaces” that balance intimate art experiences with communal activity. They highlighted the pavilion’s elegant detailing, careful use of materials, and spectacular views of CUHK’s natural landscape.
