Hong Kong comedy legend Michael Hui Koon-man made a rare public appearance Friday night at the 50th anniversary solo show of veteran artist David Chan, declaring the artist his most admired contemporary creator after decades of friendship.
The 83-year-old actor took the stage at the exhibition venue but declined interviews, instead praising Chan’s relentless boundary-pushing and thought-provoking works.
Hui highlighted a signature philosophy from the artist: nature contributes 70 percent to each piece while human effort accounts for 30 percent—effectively crediting divine inspiration for the majority.
Chan, speaking with a hoarse voice and nursing a recent back injury, shared childhood memories of scribbling on walls at age four or five, only for his father to plaster over them—yet the cycle of creation brought him joy.
He described art as a bridge that connects people, expressing deep fulfillment even if a single drawing sparks just five minutes of happiness for a viewer.
