A midwife in Jiangsu province has been suspended after accidentally cutting off a newborn's finger while cutting the umbilical cord, local health authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred on December 25 at Xuyi County People's Hospital during a cesarean section, according to a statement from the county health commission on Monday.
The father, surnamed Sheng, told Red Star News the midwife explained the baby's hand moved suddenly. The infant was transferred to another hospital in Wuxi the same day and the finger was reattached.

The county hospital arranged transfer to a provincial specialist hospital, where surgery was performed successfully in the afternoon. The baby was discharged on December 31 and is recovering.
The midwife is suspended, the hospital has apologized repeatedly and will cover treatment and recovery. All responsible personnel will be held accountable.
