According to Japanese authorities, police received a report around 10am, local time, that a woman in her 20s had been attacked by a man with a knife on a residential street in Takadanobaba district.
The victim, later confirmed to be an online personality and voice actress, Mogami Ai, suffered multiple stab wounds to her head, neck and abdomen.
She was found unconscious at the scene and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Witnesses said that the attacker, a man in his 40s, calmly carried out the assault and was later apprehended at the scene by police officers.
The man admitted to the crime and claimed to know the victim, citing a personal dispute as the motive.
Investigators are working to determine the exact nature of their relationship and the circumstances leading to the attack.
Mogami was reportedly live streaming her project to walk around Tokyo’s Yamanote Line when the attack occurred.
Viewers of the stream heard her scream for help before the feed went silent.
The live broadcast captured images of the aftermath, including the victim lying in a pool of blood and the suspect holding a knife.
Approximately 6,500 viewers witnessed the incident, with many frantically calling for help in the live chat.
Japanese media reports suggest the suspect may have been a disgruntled fan or “hater” who had previously interacted with Mogami online. However, such claims have not been verified by authorities.
