A tram struck four pedestrians outside the Kennedy Town Swimming Pool on Des Voeux Road West at 10.44 am, and a girl aged three was later pronounced dead.
A 66-year-old man and his two granddaughters were hit and became trapped underneath the tram, according to eyewitnesses. A 34-year-old Indonesian maid also suffered injuries to her waist after the incident.
The man, surnamed Yuen, had suffered severe injuries and was conscious before being rushed to hospital. The two girls were rescued shortly after, with the six-year-old found with a bleeding head, and the three-year-old unconscious with injuries to her head and chest.
All of the four were rushed to Queen Mary Hospital for treatment. However, the three-year-old was unable to survive despite resuscitation attempts.
Sources said the pedestrian lights were red as they crossed the road before being struck.
The 48-year-old tram captain, surnamed Lee, was taken by police for questioning, as the investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
Ho, a passenger on the tram, said the four came out of nowhere and the man was bleeding all over his face accident.
Other bystanders said the youngest one was not moving before rescuers had to spend around half an hour to free the three.
Hong Kong Tramways said it is "deeply saddened" by the accident, adding that the tram captain involved has been suspended from duty to assist in the investigation.
