New People’s Party lawmaker Eunice Yung Hoi-yan on Friday disowned her father-in-law in a newspaper advert over national security law concerns.
This came after the Security Bureau on Wednesday slammed several overseas activists for launching a committee to establish a “Hong Kong Parliament” in exile, with one of the activists being Yung’s father-in-law - Elmer Yuen Gong-yi.
Businessman and commentator Yuen is the father of ex-People Power chair Erica Yuen Mi-ming and scholar Derek Yuen Mi-Chang, who is married to the lawmaker.
Authorities previously said they severely condemned Elmer Yuen, Victor Ho Leung-mau, Baggio Leung Chung-hang, and others for forming a so-called “Hong Kong Parliament” overseas, suspected of contravening the National Security Law.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Yung said she placed the “righteousness of the country” before family, whereas the decision was also made to uphold the city’s principle of “one country, two systems.”
She said issuing the statement was urgent, and she felt obliged to clarify her position. The lawmaker also noted that her husband was well aware of and understood her decision.
As for her two daughters, Yung said they were “too young to understand.”
