A photo which went viral online showed a dozen of rats crawling over fresh pork laid on the floor outside the vendor during the early hours, when the market was closed.
Sau Mau Ping Central District Councilor Cheung Pui Kong, who uploaded the photo, said he received rat complaints from residents at the Sau Mau Ping
Cheung believed the rodent was related to the phased constructions there, and has reported the case to the Link-REIT – which managed the market – and the food and environmental department to request for anti-rodent measures.
A spokesperson of the Link-REIT said market vendors are not allowed to leave their goods on the floor and the vendor involved had already been warned before.
He said the vendor has now been shut down and the investment trust has contacted anti-rodent professionals for a thorough cleaning work in the market tonight.
