Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, who was dismissed from his position as the Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism on Thursday, encountered considerable criticism during his tenure. One significant issue was the absence of football star Lionel Messi from the exhibition match held in Hong Kong in January.
Yeung said at the time that the government's participation in the event was only signing a contract with the match organizer and noted that Messi's playing time arrangement was discussed between the organizer and the team Inter Miami.
He was also slammed for the poor management of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal last August, particularly regarding inadequate public transport for the growing number of visitors. Yeung later pledged that the bureau would develop an action plan for the Terminal in the first half of 2024 to facilitate the visiting tourists.
Yeung was also singled out by chief executive John Lee Ka-chiu in the Policy Address that he and the Bureau "must fulfill public aspirations by delivering results as targeted" after the Blueprint for Arts and Culture and Creative Industries Development had not been promulgated as scheduled.
Just after Yeung took the helm of the culture and tourism sectors, he had to deal with the shocking Mirror concert accident in which a giant LED screen fell and injured two dancers.
He was also criticized for not putting in full effort when organizing mega-events, especially when he replied that there was doubt whether he could get pop megastar Taylor Swift's contact number when asked if the government planned to invite her to Hong Kong for concerts.
Furthermore, debates stirred after the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau (CSTB) planned to transform the Hong Kong Science Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui into a designated museum focused on national development and achievements, while the science museum would have been relocated to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin.
Yeung later clarified that it was just a preliminary idea and that the government had found a new location for the museum.
During his tenure, several incidents occurred in which a song related to the 2019 anti-extradition protests was wrongly played instead of China's national anthem at various international sports competitions, including the Ice Hockey World Championship.
