The cotton candy-like clouds were photographed in Tai Po and Fanling, among other districts.
The Observatory said the phenomenon is called cloud iridescence, a special optical phenomenon usually observed in altostratus or altocumulus clouds near the sun when sunlight diffracts through tiny water droplets or ice crystals of fairly uniform sizes in clouds.
The Observatory reminds members of the public that while the phenomenon is always observed near the sun, one should avoid gazing into the sun directly in order to protect their eyes.
