Fostering local artistic development and community participation through artistic integration is one of the aims of the MTR Corporation. In line with this goal, The SOUTHSIDE, a new mega mall owned by the MTR Corporation connected to Wong Chuk Hang station, has recently partnered with local artists to transform the mall into an artistic attraction.
The collaboration, centered around the theme of ‘A Moment in Island South,’ features the paintings of four local artists, including Kitty N. Wong, PEI CHUNG, Zue Chan, and LeonLollipop. These artists have used their brushes to express the distinctive culture of the Southern District.
One of the local artists is Kitty Wong, a talented illustrator who studied fashion design in Canada. In her painting, Kitty melds her cartoon girl characters with the authentic sights and sounds of Hong Kong to create a vibrant artwork that captivates the gaze of passersby. Her artwork vividly depicts her cartoon characters meandering through the city streets and alleyways, exploring the intriguing and unique aspects of Island South.
In addition, Kitty has skillfully incorporated various local delicacies into her artwork. These culinary delights serve as a representation of her deep affection for Hong Kong’s local food culture. Her work seamlessly weaves together the charm of the city’s streets with its gastronomic treasures, resulting in a vibrant visual narrative.
Being a Hongkonger who holds a profound love for the city’s culture, Kitty’s art captures the very essence of Hong Kong by featuring unique scenes such as the picturesque small fishing boats in Ap Lei Chau, the bustling old-style market brimming with fresh seafood, and the nostalgic handwritten price tags. These elements are symbolic of the collective memories shared by Hongkongers, and Kitty hopes that visitors will resonate with her paintings on a personal level.
However, the creation of her artwork did not come without challenges. Kitty acknowledged that working on a large-scale mural for THE SOUTHSIDE initially posed some concern for her. Previously, her focus had been on painting smaller objects such as toys, puzzle designs, and magazine illustrations. Therefore, the transition from these smaller projects to a massive mural caused some apprehension at first. Furthermore, she also had to ensure that the illustration appeared visually appealing from a distance while also incorporating intricate details for viewers to appreciate up close.
Kitty’s artwork not only showcases her creative talent but also invites viewers to rediscover the hidden gems nestled within the old streets of Island South. She finds particular delight in strolling along its tranquil lanes to uncover hidden beauty which remains lesser-known to many Hongkongers. For those who appreciate arts and paintings, if you find yourself weary of visiting art exhibitions, perhaps embarking on a fresh exploration of Hong Kong through Kitty’s captivating large-scale paintings will ignite a renewed sense of inspiration.
In addition to Kitty’s contributions, other talented artists such as PEI CHUNG, Zue Chan, and LeonLollipop utilize their artistic skills to portray the distinctive natural beauty, marine life and delectable cuisine of Island South. Their creative creations not only showcase the rich cultural tapestry of the area but also infuse vitality into the community.
THE SOUTHSIDE’s collaboration with local artists exemplifies a fusion of art, culture, and community engagement. Through their creative endeavors, these artists are transforming a mall into a vibrant cultural hub in the heart of Island South, inviting residents and visitors alike to delve into the diverse and captivating fabric of Hong Kong’s unique heritage.
