It's the season for those long-awaited Christmas and New Year's decorations! This year, Sino Group and well-known British visual light artist Rupert Newman has collaborated to present a digital light show specially designed for Hong Kong called "In-Between the Sky: A Festive Beacon."
Named ‘The King of Projections’ by British Vogue, Newman has won praise from all over the world for his inventiveness, technical prowess, and capacity to create uplifting light shows. He's created a unique aesthetic where his imaginative designs are animated and mapped onto facades, paired with his skillful use of color.
A three-minute show called "In-Between the Sky: A Festive Beacon" features geometric artwork, light fracturing, and contrasting crystalline shapes that evoke the beauty of a Christmas kaleidoscope. It will be shown on the Sino LuminArt Façade of Tsim Sha Tsui Center, Empire Centre, and One North in Yuen Long.
Available from November 28 to January 2, the light show will turn the Sino LuminArt Façade into an exceptional multimedia piece brimming with holiday spirit.
During the period, members of the public can participate in Snap & Share by photographing Christmas decorations at Tsim Sha Tsui Center, Empire Centre, One North, Sino Plaza, and China Hong Kong City and then uploading them to their social media pages per the guidelines. Participants will receive one $20 S coupon at specific Alfresco Lane food and beverage establishments.
Furthermore, Sarah Warne, a well-known musical composer, has been invited by Newman to write music for the production. Warne is most known for her film and television drama series scores for the BBC and Channel 4.
The public can enjoy this immersive show set to music by scanning the QR code at viewing locations. Musical effects will be added for the Christmas lights at Mody Lane for the first time to enhance the festive atmosphere.
Terence Wong is Hong Kong's ‘Father of the Festive Lights’. He and his team collaborated with Newman to transform the motion graphic into conventional light installations for display at the facades of Mody Lane, Tsim Sha Tsui East; Sino Plaza, Causeway Bay; and China Hong Kong City, Tsim Sha Tsui.
Sino Group has been spearheading the development of Christmas light installations in Tsim Sha Tsui East for the past 40 years, and this joyous occasion has now become ingrained in the collective memory of the people of Hong Kong. The installations have changed with the times in recent years; light facades that combine technology and art have replaced traditional light graphics made of bulbs.
To further the goals of Sino Group's sustainable corporate social responsibility initiative, Feel the Motion, the group has invited digital art and motion graphic students to have a conversation with Newman to get inspirations from the Master. In addition to conserving the Christmas light tradition, it fosters creativity in students by educating them about current artistic movements.
