City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong features world champion harmonica virtuoso Gordon Lee in an ode to the great Tommy Reilly at the Hong Kong City Hall on July 22.
Established in 1999, Asia’s leading chamber orchestra, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (CCOHK), is set to round off its 2020/2021 season with a concert titled ‘Hooked on Harmonica’, bringing to the stage the award-winning harmonica player Gordon Lee with Colin Touchin as both guest conductor and composer.
Hailed by critics and the media for his ‘impressive virtuosity’, the Hong Kong-born Gordon Lee won the championship at the prestigious 2017 World Harmonica Festival, the highest level harmonica competition in the world, held every four years in Germany. His performing credits include appearances at distinguished musical venues across the globe, such as Carnegie Hall in New York and MuTh Concert Hall in Vienna, as well as collaborations with Hong Kong’s best-known pop icons.
On this occasion, the harmonica virtuoso will enchant the audience with his performance of Spivakovsky’s Harmonica Concerto, a work originally dedicated to the legendary Tommy Reilly, and the first concerto ever written for the instrument with orchestral accompaniment. Known for its high technical demands on the solo performer, Spivakovsky’s Harmonica Concerto is also applauded for it’s melodically infectious tunes.
The world premiere of Colin Touchin’s Sinfonietta No.4 - conducted by the composer himself - also promises to be another exciting highlight of the concert. To conclude, CCOHK will lead the audience through a journey with Carl Maria von Weber’s Symphony No.2, a colourfully orchestrated and rarely heard symphonic gem in romantic style by one of Beethoven’s most significant contemporaries.
Tickets priced at $420, $300, $220, with half-price concessions for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients, are available from all URBTIX outlets.
