White House officials sparked controversy after giving unconventional responses regarding the venue selection for the upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump announced plans to meet Putin in Budapest to discuss ending the Ukraine war. The location choice drew scrutiny since Putin faces an ICC arrest warrant, and Hungary shows limited cooperation with the court.
When HuffPost asked who selected the venue, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded: "Your mom did." Communications Director Steven Cheung gave the same answer. Questioned about the remark's appropriateness, Leavitt stated: "What's actually funny is that you think you're a journalist. You're just a far-left activist that nobody takes seriously."
White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers defended the responses as "more than appropriate," characterizing the reporter as a "Democratic activist" rather than a real journalist. He noted the media team handles hundreds of serious inquiries daily without time for "partisan impostors."
Leavitt previously described Democrats' base as "Hamas terrorists, illegal immigrants, and violent criminals" during a Fox News appearance. Tensions between the White House and media continue escalating during the election period.
