A Tesla robotics technician has filed a $51 million lawsuit against the automaker and robotics supplier FANUC America after allegedly being struck by a malfunctioning robot at the Fremont factory in July 2023.
Peter Hinterdobler, 50, claims the robot's arm "suddenly and without warning released with great force" while he was assisting with its disassembly. The impact knocked him unconscious and left him with serious injuries.
The technician alleges accumulated $1 million in medical expenses with an estimated $6 million more needed for future treatment. His lawsuit seeks damages for lost wages, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and reduced earning capacity.
Hinterdobler claims Tesla failed to ensure the robot was safely de-energized and secured before maintenance, and alleges FANUC America was negligent in the equipment's design. He also states Tesla implemented new safety protocols for the machine following his accident.
Neither Tesla nor FANUC America immediately responded to requests for comment. The case was filed in California last week.
