Holy trinity

Looking at the sleek, modern lines of the Cartier Trinity ring, it's hard to imagine it's actually 100 years old.

When Louis Cartier's imagined the ring in 1924, it was something far out of the norm. That ring - composed of three interlinked rings in yellow, rose and white gold - heralded a new era in jewelry ad became the maison's first design icon.

A century later, Cartier celebrates its anniversary by introducing simple yet daring new designs: a reissue of the XL bracelet from the 2000s - a cult favorite - and an XL version of the ring.

Over the years, the basic concept has remained the some but what has changed is the shape and distortion of the bands. A creative exercise in style, coupled with a geometric approach has resulted in variations on the timeless Trinity. This includes a cushion-shaped version whose rings slide one above the other with the same naturalness as the round one. It is available as classic and large gold rings, some paved with diamonds, a bracelet and a pendant.

Next month, the maison will bring out a modular version - which can be worn as one wide band, or as an intertwining diamond ring.
