In his policy address last year, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced that a pilot scheme would be implemented at the re-provisioned Chung Ying Street checkpoint in the fourth quarter.
This scheme aims to use facial recognition technology to streamline the movement of individuals permitted to access Chung Ying Street.
Tang said the installation of the facial recognition system is nearing completion.
He added: "This system could enhance the checkpoint's capacity to manage visitors and foster future tourism development."In June 2022, the Sha Tau Kok Pier opened to group tours, marking the first phase of the area's opening to boost tourism and local culture.
The second phase commenced on January 1 this year, allowing both individual and group visitors to explore the Sha Tau Kok area, excluding Chung Ying Street, for sightseeing.Authorities have established a daily quota of 2,300 individual visitors and 700 group visitors on weekends and public holidays, with no group quota on weekdays.
Visitors must apply for a Tourism Closed Area Permit for entry.Currently, Chung Ying Street remains a restricted area, with tourists only permitted to view it from the Chung Ying Street Garden.
