Top actor donates $3m to 200 kids

Acclaimed actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai has donated HK$3 million to the Hong Kong Paediatric Society's "HKPS Bright Future Scholarship" program, which helps nearly 200 children with chronic diseases or special educational needs each year.

The scholarship is providing grants ranging from HK$15,000 to HK$20,000 to 190 students this year.

Speaking at the award ceremony yesterday, Leung stressed the importance of caring for these vulnerable youth.

"These youngsters have a poor family environment and chronic diseases. They have to work harder than ordinary people to face life's challenges," he said.

"I hope the winners make good use of the funds and continue to pursue their dreams."

In addition to the monetary donation, Leung also contributed paintings from his private collection by renowned artist Zao Wou-Ki to support the scholarship fund for the coming year.

The scholarship is a collaborative effort between the Hong Kong Paediatric Society, the Bright Future Charitable Foundation, and The Boys and Girls Clubs Association of Hong Kong. The grant can be used by recipients for study-related expenses or to purchase equipment to help them achieve their goals.

Out of the 190 scholarship recipients, 20 students received the higher HK$20,000 grant each, with half of them coming from underprivileged families or having chronic diseases, and 45 percent having special educational needs.

The remaining 170 students were awarded HK$15,000 each, with 30 percent from grassroots families or having chronic diseases, and 60 percent with special educational needs.

Bright Future Charitable Foundation founder Roy Chung Chi-ping expressed gratitude for Leung's "spirit of selfless dedication," adding it is an example for everyone in attendance to learn from.
