Roach returns resolute

Stephen Roach, a recent doomsayer of Hong Kong, will join two events in the city this week, but is not here to "apologize" for his comments.

Roach, the former chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia, sparked heated discussion when he concluded "Hong Kong is over."

This week, he will visit Beijing and Hong Kong to attend some events. Roach is set to talk with Ronnie Chan Chi-chung, the former Hang Lung Group and Hang Lung Properties chairman, at Asia Society today, in addition to a luncheon with The Foreign Correspondents' Club Hong Kong on Wednesday. "I am not going back to Hong Kong to apologize, but to explain how and why I have come to a very tough prognosis for this great city," Roach wrote in his article "The Power of Debate."

Roach has three major concerns about China that he will bring up in Beijing: the growing likelihood of China's "Japanization," China's diminishing role as an engine of global growth and the seemingly ever-increasing danger of conflict between the United States and China.
