Hong Kong Rugby Union chief executive Robbie McRobbie informed the governing body of the sport in the SAR that he intends to step down from his role in the middle of next year.
After joining the union as community rugby manager in 2003 and ascending to his current position in 2017, he will leave after next year's Rugby Sevens, the final one to be held at the Hong Kong Stadium before moving to the new Kai Tak stadium.
McRobbie also said it has been "an honor and privilege" to have been able to work in a sport he loves and with people who are "committed and passionate about sport and its potential as a driving force for good in society."
"While we have endured some tough times in recent years because of Covid-19, I can honestly say that I could not have asked for a more fulfilling and enjoyable career over the past 20 years," McRobbie said."I will forever be thankful that I have been able to combine my love of rugby with earning a living while also having a lot of fun along the way," he added.
Chairman Chris Brooke was disappointed by the "highly competent and well-respected" McRobbie's decision "but we respect his decision and wish him all the very best in the future.""Robbie has always been a passionate advocate for grassroots development and was instrumental in the setting up of our Community Foundation, now Rugby for Good, which has been a leader in the sport-for-good sector in Hong Kong," he said.
"I am certain he will continue to contribute to the rugby community."Brooke also said that the early indication from McRobbie gives the board of directors sufficient time to identify a successor as well as manage a smooth handover.
"The board will launch a global recruitment exercise," Brooke said.
