The development of Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) is advancing in Hong Kong. To further share best practices and promote the wider adoption of MiC, the Construction Industry Council (CIC) successfully held the MiC / MiMEP Achievement Awards Presentation Ceremony on Monday, 30 March 2026. The event celebrated outstanding achievements in MiC and Multi-trade Integrated Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MiMEP) projects in Hong Kong.

MiC adopts a “factory-first followed by on-site assembly” approach, manufacturing complete modular components — including finishes, fixtures and building services — in a controlled factory that can reduces reliance on weather, labour shortages and site constraints while enhancing quality, productivity, safety and sustainability. MiMEP applies similar prefabrication principles to mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for greater efficiency, consistency and environmental benefits. Both methods integrate Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) to optimise processes.

Whilst the first MiC Achievement Awards in 2022 recognised pioneering projects, this year’s programme was expanded to include MiMEP for the first time, reflecting its growing use in government buildings, public housing and major developments. Some of the award-winning projects have more than 80% adoption rate in MiMEP, and elevated construction standards. On the other hand, by adopting MIMEP, it is now easier for projects to make use of technologies such as AI and digital platform to enhance quality and progress monitoring.

Ir Prof. Thomas Ho, Chairman of CIC, highlighted the growing significance of modular construction during the ceremony. “The global modular construction market is projected to grow by nearly 40% over the next five years, driven by needs for higher productivity, safety and sustainability. Hong Kong has already implemented over 150 MiC projects and more than 80 MiMEP projects across public and private sectors, covering housing, healthcare, education and infrastructure.”
He added that these projects deliver clear benefits in efficiency, quality, safety and sustainability. “We are launching a CIC Master Class on MiMEP for RMAA to upskill the industry, promote digital delivery, BIM and AI, and support the full project lifecycle from concept development to facility management. This aligns with our vision of a high-productivity construction hub, where MiC and MiMEP will feature in half of the 300,000 new public housing units over the next decade.”
A total of 23 awards were presented, including Special Recognition Award and the Outstanding (Design) and Outstanding (Completed) categories for both MiC and MiMEP.
