Seniors need to apply for the JoyYou card, otherwise they cannot enjoy the discounted fare even if they have the senior anonymous card.
The age requirement that allows seniors and persons with disabilities to enjoy HK$2 per trip on public transport will be lowered to 60, from 65, in February.
Secretary for Labour and Welfare Law Chi-kwong reminded the public on his blog that those born in 1957 can register for the card from today until August 31. Each of the next four months will be dedicated to applicants born from 1958 to 1961, in that order.
From January 1, applications will be open to all residents who turn 60 within three months from the date of application.
Law said the card will bear the holder's photo and name, with each person to be issued one card only.
Cardholders can enjoy the concessionary fare starting from February 27, the same day when the scheme expands to cover red minibus, kaito and tramway trips.
Law encouraged people to register on the Octopus mobile application, saying the cards would be mailed to their Hong Kong postal address in four weeks.
Applicants need their Hong Kong identity card and a digital, colored passport photo to apply.
Residents can also obtain application forms on Octopus' website, MTR customer service centers and district elderly community centers, and submit the forms by post.
First-time applicants do not have to pay the HK$20 application fee. Cardholders should load at least HK$50 to the card before initial use to cover a HK$50 refundable deposit.
Seniors aged 65 and above can continue to use their anonymous elder Octopus or personalized Octopus to enjoy the HK$2 scheme at present. Those with disabilities can continue to enjoy the concessionary fare without applying for a JoyYou Card.
Lowering the eligible age to 60 is expected to benefit more than 600,000 people.
