Ho, who was posthumously promoted to senior fireman, lost his life while taking part in rescue operations during the blaze.
The payment was approved under the Financial Assistance Scheme for Family Members of Those Who Sacrifice Their Lives to Save Others, a government program that provides financial support to the families of individuals who die while attempting to rescue or protect others.
Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han, who chairs the committee responsible for approving applications under the scheme, said Ho’s actions demonstrated extraordinary bravery.
“Ho demonstrated exceptional courage and a high degree of gallantry to save and protect the lives of others, which commands our greatest respect,” Sun said.
He added that the assistance grant recognizes Ho’s dedication and sacrifice.
“The grant represents the Government's recognition of the late Mr Ho's gallantry and selflessness of the highest order,” he said.
The Financial Assistance Scheme for Family Members of Those Who Sacrifice Their Lives to Save Others was established in January 2002 to support families of individuals who lose their lives while rescuing or protecting others.
Under the scheme, the amount of assistance is calculated based on a formula that considers the age of the deceased, the normal retirement age and the prevailing median monthly employment earnings in Hong Kong.
The current minimum and maximum levels of assistance are set at HK$6.15 million and HK$12.3 million respectively.
