The Facebook page “Papa Sighs the World” posted today about an incident at a Toyoko Inn in Okinawa. The page admin described meeting a fellow Hongkonger who, during breakfast, loudly complained, “Come to Japan to eat this kind of thing!” and then shouted, “Even dogs wouldn’t eat it!”
The admin responded coldly, “Oh, so you’re not eating then,” which silenced the man.
Despite his remarks, the man eventually sat down and ate the breakfast he had just insulted.

Photos shared by the admin show a typical Toyoko Inn breakfast: onigiri in various flavors, including fried chicken, crispy sausages, thick Japanese tamagoyaki, noodle soup, Meiji yogurt, and unlimited coffee and juice.
Netizens who have stayed at Toyoko Inn uploaded their own photos proving the breakfast’s variety and value, featuring items like curry rice, grilled fish, salads, and croissants across different branches.
Online reaction was overwhelmingly critical of the man’s behavior.
Most agreed that for a budget hotel charging around HK$300–400 per night with free breakfast, the food is perfectly acceptable and offers good value.
Comments highlighted “you get what you pay for” and suggested if he wanted luxury, he should choose a ryokan or higher-end hotel.
Many mocked his hypocrisy: complaining loudly yet finishing the meal.
Loyal Toyoko Inn fans defended the chain, praising its cleanliness, convenience, affordability, and “homey” breakfast that feels made with care.
Some noted extra perks like free afternoon curry at certain branches.
