Labour chief vows swift probe and tough action on recent fatal industrial accidents

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han on Saturday expressed high concern over three recent fatal industrial accidents. 

The Labour Department will expedite evidence collection; anyone found negligent or failing to act will face serious prosecution under the law.

The department will intensify surprise inspections and patrols, with extra focus on cranes and mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs). 

Enhanced publicity and education efforts will also target these high-risk operations.

On MEWPs specifically, authorities plan to soon issue an updated code of practice incorporating technology for better safety, alongside strengthened training.

Addressing whether the 2023 amendments increasing penalties have failed to deter accidents, 

Sun said if court judgments show penalties remain insufficient, the government will appeal through the judicial process to boost deterrence.
