48-year-old taxi driver arrested over alleged longer-route violation during New Year holiday operation

Police arrested a 48-year-old local taxi driver on Friday (Jan 2) during an undercover operation targeting illegal taxi practices over the New Year holiday.

Officers from the Traffic Enforcement and Control Division of the New Territories North Region posed as passengers and discovered that the driver allegedly took a longer route instead of the most direct one to his destination, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Police photos showed officers identifying themselves and stopping the driver outside the bridge crossing.

He was arrested on suspicion of taking a longer route instead of the most direct route to his destination. He was later released on bail pending further investigation and is required to report to police in late January. The taxi involved has been detained for further examination.

Police said they take taxi-related offenses seriously and will continue to enforce the law decisively to safeguard passengers’ rights and maintain order in public transport services.
