Fire at Mei Foo Sun Chuen forces dozens to evacuate

A fire broke out in a high-floor unit at Mei Foo Sun Chuen in Lai Chi Kok late on Tuesday, forcing about 50 residents to evacuate.

Police received multiple reports at 10.53pm of heavy smoke coming from the unit in the estate's Phase 4. Firefighters arrived and used one hose and a breathing apparatus team to extinguish the blaze by 11.16pm.

Residents, some in nightwear, gathered outside in the cold as black smoke billowed from the unit and alarms sounded. No injuries were reported.

The cause is under investigation. Some roads were temporarily closed for fire vehicles.
