MTR Corporation chief executive Jacob Kam Chak-pui has pledged to deliver strategic insights and promote good governance for the company as he assumes the new chairman role for a three-year term starting January 1, succeeding Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen.
Jeny Yeung Mei-chun, the managing director of Hong Kong transport services, will fill Kam's shoes.
In a newspaper article reviewing the past year's works, Kam highlighted that MTR was invited by the government to initiate detailed planning and design for the South Island Line (West) project earlier this month.
He noted that the Beijing Metro Line 4 and the northern section of the Shenzhen Metro Line 13, in which MTR participates in the operations, have commenced services over the past week.
He pointed out that the launch of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, recognized as one of the city's largest infrastructure projects in 40 years, is managed by an MTR subsidiary.
Recalling his early days with MTR in the 1990s, Kam noted that there were only three metro lines in Hong Kong. The MTR network now connects 18 districts, spans over 271 kilometers, and is approaching its 100th station.
He expressed pride in being part of a locally grown company that has expanded its reach, taking the Hong Kong brand to cities both in mainland China and around the world. He feels grateful to collaborate with the MTR team on major transport infrastructure projects and to witness the city’s evolution, cherishing each moment a new line opens and trains begin their journey.
Kam affirmed his readiness to assume the role of chairman and his commitment to working with the Board to provide strategic contributions and uphold good governance within the company.
