The male patient developed a rash overseas on December 18, followed by skin ulcers and fever. He returned to Hong Kong on December 25 and later sought treatment at Tin Shui Wai Hospital and Pok Oi Hospital before being admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital on December 27. He tested positive for mpox and is in stable condition.
He had not been vaccinated, was overseas throughout the incubation period and had a history of high-risk exposure. No epidemiological link to earlier local cases has been found. The centre is investigating and will report to the World Health Organization.
Since 2022, Hong Kong has recorded 84 mpox cases (67 local, 17 imported), with 16 this year. All patients were male, with most reporting high-risk sexual behavior. The new mpox strain (Clade Ib) has not been detected locally.
High-risk groups – including those with multiple sexual partners, sex workers, healthcare workers caring for patients, relevant laboratory and animal care staff – can get walk-in vaccinations at designated Social Hygiene Service Clinics and other centers.
