A residential unit caught fire in Ngau Tau Kok early Thursday morning, sending a married couple to hospital for smoke inhalation.
The fire broke out at around 5am in a flat on the ninth floor of Mee On Building, located at 41–47 Hang On Street. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the unit.
The female tenant of the unit reported the incident and escaped the building with her husband and son.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and deployed a jet and a breathing apparatus team to tackle the blaze. An aerial ladder was also raised to assist with rescue operations. The fire was later brought under control.
About 70 residents evacuated the building on their own, with some taking temporary refuge on the rooftop.
The 46-year-old female tenant and her 61-year-old husband, both surnamed Choi, felt unwell after inhaling smoke and were taken by ambulance to United Christian Hospital for treatment.
No suspicious circumstances were detected in the initial investigation, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
