Tai Po voters expressed hope to elect new representatives in the Legislative Council who will prioritize systemic changes and enforce stricter regulations within the construction industry, motivated by the recent deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court that claimed multiple lives and left many community members in distress.
In response to the tragedy, the Registration and Electoral Office has taken steps to assist affected residents by relocating three polling stations and providing free shuttle services to facilitate their voting in the election.
Among those casting their votes was Lam, a resident of Wang Fuk Court, who now finds himself temporarily living in Sheung Shui after losing his home in the fire.
Despite the devastating impact of the incident, Lam remained determined to vote. "I had already decided who to vote for – the one that benefits Hong Kong's development the most," he stated, praising the government's support for victims and expressing confidence in follow-up actions regarding the fire.
He also stressed the importance of reforming construction regulations to prevent future tragedies.
Another resident, Tam, utilized the free shuttle service to reach the polling station. He expressed hope that new lawmakers would emerge who could "genuinely help us and the residents of Wang Fuk Court, ensure that we get a new home" and "effectively oversee the major maintenance project ahead".
Wong, a resident of Kwong Fuk Estate with friends and family affected by the fire, shared his heavy-hearted feelings regarding the incident. He hopes to elect representatives who will "help Hongkongers strive for economic recovery and unite the city" while dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy.
Wong admitted that the fire had impacted his voting intentions, "I had a preferred candidate at first, but I reviewed more on their political platforms to see what they truly offer for Hong Kong."
Leung, also from Kwong Fuk Estate, said, "I hope to elect new lawmakers who can support citizens and livelihoods." She believed the government will continue to address the situation following the fire and that it would take time for a thorough investigation into the fire.
