The deadly fire that swept through Wang Fuk Court has claimed the lives of five workers who were carrying out the estate’s renovation, the Labour Department confirmed on Monday.
Three men and two women employed by the main contractor perished in the blaze, with several more injured.
Officials expressed deep sorrow for the loss and extended heartfelt condolences to the families while wishing a swift recovery to those still in hospital.
The department is working alongside other agencies in a joint investigation and has urged every construction firm across Hong Kong to immediately tighten fire-safety measures on scaffolding sites, ensure all materials meet flame-retardant standards, keep walkways clear of debris, and enforce strict no-smoking rules.
Employers have been reminded of their legal duty to provide compensation under the Employees’ Compensation Ordinance, and the Labour Department has already reached out to the affected companies, injured workers, and bereaved families to offer practical help, including fast-track access to emergency relief funds and referrals to social-welfare services.
