In a statement issued on Monday (Dec 1), the watchdog said scammers have been impersonating volunteers to obtain details such as Chinese and English names, Hong Kong Identity Card numbers, telephone numbers, as well as bank account and credit card information.
The PCPD also highlighted reports of phishing SMS messages masquerading as charitable organizations seeking donations for victims of the fire.
The messages attempt to lure recipients into clicking embedded links that lead to fraudulent fundraising websites designed to steal money.
The public is urged to verify the authenticity of any registration forms and to avoid disclosing sensitive financial information, including bank account passwords or verification codes.
Authorities reminded citizens wishing to make donations to do so only through official channels, such as the government’s designated bank account for the “Support Fund for Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po.”
Members of the public who receive suspicious SMS messages or phone calls may contact the PCPD for inquiries or to lodge a complaint.
If personal data fraud is suspected and may constitute a criminal offence, the matter should be reported to the police immediately.
Residents are further advised to use the “Scameter” website to check suspicious phone numbers, email addresses, and web domains.
The PCPD also expressed deep sorrow over the serious casualties caused by the fire and extended condolences to the deceased and to the firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.
