Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the Fire Services Department has assessed it has enough personnel to handle the major blaze at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, even as photos circulated online showing Shenzhen firefighters gathering near the border.
The grade five fire has so far killed 36 people, injured dozens, and left 279 people still unaccounted for. Last night, cross-border social media users posted images of a large group of Shenzhen firefighters assembling outside the Liantang Port, suggesting they were on standby to assist in Hong Kong. However, no Shenzhen firefighters were seen at the Wang Fuk Court site this morning.
Speaking to the media early today, Lee thanked neighboring cities for their concern, and the Fire Services Department confirmed it has not requested mainland assistance.
Lee said he was grateful for the concern shown by President Xi Jinping. He also received messages from leaders of neighboring cities who proactively offered assistance, including aid for the injured, medical equipment, or tools, if Hong Kong needed any help.
He thanked the various units in neighboring cities for their warmth and concern, adding he would personally explain the fire situation to every neighboring city leader or unit that contacted him and keep in touch, hoping to get as much help as possible to resolve the devastating fire.
Lee added the fire is gradually coming under control, and he believes the Fire Services Department will be able to fully contain the blaze soon. He thanked every firefighter for their dedication in battling the fire.
