As the December Legislative Council election approaches, the MTR Corporation announced it will advance its first train schedules to facilitate polling station preparations.
In a published article in Sing Tao Daily, the sister publication of The Standard, MTR Corporation CEO Jacob Kam Chak-pui on Tuesday (Nov 18) emphasized LegCo's vital role in fostering the city's prosperity.
In response to the extended voting hours, the MTR will adjust its schedule to ensure that polling personnel have the necessary time to get to their stations.
Additionally, the railway operator will utilize advertising panels at stations and select entry gates to display election reminders, assisting the Registration and Electoral Office in guiding voters, including those from the mainland, to the Near Border Polling Stations.
To encourage voter turnout, the MTR will deploy extra staff on duty that day to ensure flexible operations and to encourage employees to cast their votes.
“Voting is not only a citizen's right but also a responsibility—a valuable opportunity to elect capable representatives who will shape Hong Kong’s future,” Kam noted.
MTR employees play a key role in election: Transport and Logistics Bureau
The Transport and Logistics Bureau has echoed the importance of public participation, where Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan recently visited the MTR Kowloon Bay Depot and Headquarters alongside Kam and other executives to participate in the election mobilization activities.
Chan highlighted the pivotal role of the MTR's approximately 18,000 employees, stating their active engagement in the election is crucial for selecting capable representatives to work with the government in steering Hong Kong's development.
Serving over five million passengers daily, the bureau emphasized the MTR’s role as an important medium for reaching a wide audience.
With over 1,700 election posters displayed at various stations, Chan encouraged the MTR to mobilize its workforce to vote and promote the importance of the December 7 LegCo election.
