Hong Kong’s first ‘Electric Appliance Library’ opens at Yuen Long public housing estate

CLP Power Hong Kong has launched the city’s first-ever Electric Appliance Library at the Yau Pok Road Light Public Housing (LPH) estate in Yuen Long, offering residents free access to a range of energy-efficient household devices.

The pilot initiative provides 125 appliances for borrowing, including cordless cyclone vacuum cleaners, upright garment steamers, inverter steam-microwave ovens, and oscillating ceramic heaters.

Large appliances can be borrowed from the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) service point within the estate, while smaller items are available around the clock through self-service smart lockers.

One resident said the ability to borrow an electric oven “is very convenient.”

Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin said she hopes the project can eventually be extended to other Light Public Housing developments, and encouraged more socially responsible enterprises to join similar collaborations.

CLP Power Managing Director Joseph Law Ka-chun said he hopes the library’s appliances will encourage LPH households to adopt greener, low-carbon lifestyles, while also improving convenience and quality of life.
