In a social media post on Threads on Sunday (Nov 2), a passerby captured the long line at a shop selling traditional Cantonese-style cakes on Poplar Street when he was heading to develop film nearby.
As the street typically sees little foot traffic, the poster expressed confusion about the sudden popularity of the store.
The post quickly garnered attention, with many users curious about the source of the unexpected buzz.
The question was later solved as some commenters dug up posts on Xiaohongshu, where many influencers recommended the shop’s traditional red bean cake and black sesame roll.
Among the endorsers was Wong Cho-lam, who described the traditional red bean cake as a must-try for red bean lovers, emphasizing the generous portions of red beans that make each cake exceptional.
Wong specifically highlighted the “unbeatable” flavor of Chenpi–sun-dried mandarin orange peel–marveling that such a treat cost only HK$6.
He even mentioned that he often eats at least three cakes at a time, which has undoubtedly drawn his fans to the shop.
However, reactions have been mixed among those who have tried the celebrated treats.
"It's not that special," one commenter noted, while others suggested alternative shops to avoid the queues.
Additionally, some users pointed out the shop’s irregular hours, as the owner occasionally closes without notice, making it a gamble for those eager to try the pastries.
