Suspected assailant with schizophrenia attacks Indonesian helper in Tsing Yi

An Indonesian domestic helper was seriously injured in a knife attack in Tsing Yi on Monday night, while the suspected assailant died after falling from height. 

It is believed that the 31-year-old assailant, surnamed Fong, had reportedly suffered from schizophrenia. Fong had previously complained to his mother in 2022 about hearing the domestic worker speak ill of him. However, the suspect's family had never witnessed any direct conflict between them, and the domestic worker had only been employed in the unit on the same floor since July this year.

White candles were lit up outside the unit of the deceased assailant on Tuesday afternoon. The father of the suspect assailant expressed deep sorrow over his son., "He has been hospitalized before and has been out for some time. Perhaps the doctors thought he was fit to be discharged," he said. 

He mentioned that the family is currently waiting for an autopsy, and hopes society will pay more attention to mental health issues.

The employer of the attacked domestic worker did not comment on the incident, stating that the matter is under police investigation.

The incident occurred around 9 pm at Leung Fat House, Cheung Fat Estate on Monday. The 47-year-old helper was taking out trash when she was allegedly attacked by a man with a knife, suffering around ten wounds to her face, back of the head, right shoulder, and arms. She fell to the ground and cried for help while the assailant fled down the corridor.

A resident on the third floor detected a gas smell and discovered the unconscious body of a man on the second-floor platform around the same time. The unconscious man, who was later confirmed to be the suspect, was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. 

A broken and blood-stained knife was found outside the domestic worker's unit, along with a cutter with part of the blade intact, and a left sneaker near the  railing where Fong is believed to have fallen.  A knife approximately 15 centimeters long and a right sneaker were also found beside him on the platform.
