Government team edges out lawmakers 2-1 in friendly football match at Kai Tak

In a spirited display of camaraderie and competition, Hong Kong’s government team narrowly defeated the Legislative Council team 2-1 in a football friendly held at the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground on Saturday despite challenging weather conditions. 

The match, which marked the first time the event was hosted at the new venue, served as both a team-building exercise and a warm-up for the upcoming 15th National Games.

The game kicked off in the early afternoon under the threat of a No. 3 typhoon signal, with the government team taking an early lead in the 17th minute when a penalty was awarded and successfully converted by Civil Engineering and Development Department Deputy Head Mike Cho Wai-hung. 

The Legislative Council team fought back in the second half, equalizing in the 30th minute with a goal from an imported player, the son of lawmaker Chan Hok-fung. 

However, the government regained the lead shortly after through a goal by Principal Assistant Secretary from the Financial Services and the Treasury Timothy Wong Tsz-kit, securing the victory.

The event, attended by over 40 government officials and their families, was a lively affair, with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and Legislative Council President Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen jointly officiating the opening ceremony. 

The match was seen as a symbol of the strong partnership between the government and the legislature, with both sides working together for Hong Kong’s future. 

The Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, capable of hosting 5,000 spectators and featuring world-class tracks certified by World Athletics, provided an ideal backdrop for the occasion, suitable for football, rugby, and school sports events.

Adding a festive touch, the mascots of the 15th National Games, Xiyangyang and Lerongrong, set to take place from November 9 to 21 across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, made a special appearance. 

Hong Kong will host eight competitive events and one public sports activity, and the match was used to rally public support for the upcoming games. 

Lee said that the event highlighted the shared commitment of Hong Kong’s administration and legislature to foster unity and promote the city’s vibrancy, with the football match serving as a metaphor for coordinated governance. 

The Hong Kong leader also emphasized the importance of strategic teamwork, likening it to balancing development and security in Hong Kong’s governance. 

The match also aimed to generate excitement for the National Games, encouraging residents to cheer on athletes in the upcoming multi-sport event, Lee added.
