Drunk passenger assaults taxi driver in Causeway Bay over navigation app dispute

A taxi driver was assaulted by a drunken passenger in Causeway Bay early Thursday morning following an argument about using Amap navigation.

The incident occurred around 3am when the 70-year-old driver picked up a shorts-clad male passenger on Yiu Wa Street. Upon arriving near the bus stop at 2 Pak Fuk Road, the passenger allegedly became abusive, questioning the driver's use of the mainland navigation app and suspecting him of being from mainland China.

The situation escalated into physical violence with the passenger punching, kicking, and attacking the driver with an umbrella, additionally smashing the driver's mobile phone. Police arrived at the scene and detained the suspect for investigation.

The driver sustained mouth bleeding and visible right arm injuries, requiring ambulance transport to hospital for treatment. Officers noted the suspect exhibited signs of alcohol consumption during the incident.
