An off-duty Hong Kong police officer, recently linked to a scam operation in Cambodia, has submitted his resignation after returning to the city, with the police’s Organized Crime and Triad Bureau now probing the incident.
The officer, who returned to Hong Kong on Thursday, has since submitted a resignation letter, and the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau is now investigating the case.
A team of four officers was dispatched to Cambodia to gather details about the incident, with the investigation focusing on uncovering the circumstances surrounding the officer’s alleged involvement.
In other developments, Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming spoke to the media at the Hong Kong Police College Passing Out Parade, highlighting positive trends in recruitment.
Over the first five months of the fiscal year, the police force has seen a steady increase in new recruits.
The inaugural batch of trainees from the Diploma of Applied Education—Police Cadet Training graduated in May and began foundational training at the Police College in July. The program’s second cohort has attracted even greater interest, with 210 trainees enrolled.
With the National Games set to commence in two months, Chow emphasized that the police are well-prepared to ensure the event’s success.
Comprehensive plans for security and crowd management are in place to facilitate a smooth and safe experience for all attendees.
Addressing recent court rulings involving police officers, where some public opinions suggested lighter penalties compared to cases involving civilians, Chow expressed respect for the judiciary’s decisions.
He noted that the courts thoroughly consider all relevant factors in their judgments.
The police force will follow established protocols to address any potential disciplinary actions arising from such cases, though no further comments were made on specific rulings.
