A 71-year-old motorcyclist has succumbed to injuries sustained in a head-on collision with another rider on Sunday afternoon along Route Twisk in Yuen Long.
The victim, identified only by his surname, Liu, passed away early Tuesday at Tuen Mun Hospital after suffering extensive injuries in the crash.
The accident occurred when a 22-year-old surnamed Tang attempted to cross double solid lines to enter the empty area near the military camp along the downhill section of the road.
His sudden maneuver placed him directly in the path of Liu’s oncoming motorcycle traveling uphill. Both riders were thrown from their vehicles upon impact.
According to photos online, debris from both motorcycles was scattered across the scene, with significant bloodstains and a damaged helmet visible on the roadway.
The section of Route Twisk was closed for several hours as emergency crews responded and traffic officers documented evidence.
The younger rider sustained leg injuries but remained conscious following the collision.
He cooperated with authorities as the investigation continues into potential traffic violations, including illegal lane crossing and possible speeding factors.
Liu has been identified as a beloved resident of Tuen Mun's Yau Oi Estate, where neighbors describe him as a kind and helpful man who lived alone after his wife returned to their hometown and his two married daughters moved away.
Multiple neighbors told local media that the man was known for his friendly demeanor and willingness to assist others in the community.
Despite living alone, he maintained warm relationships with those around him, regularly greeting neighbors and offering help with various problems.
One elderly female resident recalled how Liu had comforted her after her husband's passing, noting his genuine compassion.
Liu was known to use both his motorcycle and bicycle for transportation, though neighbors were unsure about his former occupation.
